Funeral Elegy (4)
Description
Xuan Yu hopes that you can recite the funeral elegy for the souls of the fallen together with him.
He speaks the first half of the couplet - 'Years of sorrow - feelings carved as if by inheritance, ' and you continue with the second half - 'Cypress groves have risen beside the neighboring graves.'
The work is called 'Elegy for the Talented Sons' (Lou Yao (1137-1213), Southern Song Dynasty) and reads in full:
Why should anyone need posthumous glory?
People perish - and again melancholy rules the heart.
The coffin lid is closed, sorrowful is my dream,
I shall offer my sword as a gift and bow low.
How dare we judge someone's good or evil?
To understand what was and is - that is enough for me.
Years of sorrow - feelings carved as if by inheritance,
Cypress groves have risen beside the neighboring graves.
