Mourning Elegy (1)
Description
Xuan Yu hopes that you can recite a mourning elegy together with him for the souls of the fallen.
He speaks the first half of the couplet - 'Why does anyone need posthumous glory?', and you continue with the second half - 'People perish - sorrow rules the heart once more.'
The work is called 'Elegy for the Talented Sons' (Lou Yao (1137-1213), Southern Song Dynasty) and reads in full:
Why does anyone need posthumous glory?
People perish - sorrow rules the heart once more.
The coffin lid is closed, my dream is sorrowful,
I shall offer a sword as gift and bow in tribute.
How dare we judge someone's good or evil?
To understand what was and is - that is enough for me.
Years of grief - the feeling carved as if by inheritance,
A cypress forest has risen by the neighboring graves.
