The World Tree over the Western Continent

Overview

Long ago the Central Lands and the Western Continent drifted apart. Torn away from everything that held it up, the Western Continent stood on the edge of ruin — until a colossal ash tree rose from it and wound its enormous roots around the whole land, and so kept it whole.

The closing chapter of the Western Continent's story tells of gods set against giants, of generosity and of treachery, of monsters with kind hearts and celestials with black intentions. The vision of the last day comes true as inescapable fate, and a red glow spreads above the World Tree. What burns away in that cleansing fire is not only the threat hanging over the people of the West, but also our certainty that we ever truly knew our old companions — or Althea herself.

Where the Second and Third Roots lie

The territories of the Second and Third Roots of the World Tree lie almost directly across from Nicada, on the left bank of the Seidis Canal. There is a certain symmetry to that: these are the very shores we sailed past when we first set foot on the Western Continent aboard the Dreamchaser.

Three interwoven storylines

The region carries three tightly linked story chains. The Sealed Sky chain, the final stage of spiritual growth, is playable from the first quest to the last with no intermediate Boundary requirements along the way. As you progress through it, the quests of the two other branches open up: The Past of the Giants (the Second Root storyline) and Tales of the Gods (the Third Root storyline).

Nothing gates the Sealed Sky chain partway through — once you are on Sealed Sky, you can run the whole line end to end without stopping to raise your Boundary.

The World Journey system

These territories also introduce a dedicated World Journey system. It rewards you for combing carefully through the marked areas and completing the various mini-quests scattered across them. Doing so earns search points, and as they build up you can claim rewards directly from the event window.

Daily quest: Western Continent·Hero Spirit

The moment you reach Sealed Sky level 1, a new daily quest becomes available: Western Continent·Hero Spirit. It ties into the storyline, but you do not need to have finished the storyline to run it.

Herald trials and extra skill slots

Once you step onto the final Boundary tier, you can also take on three additional herald trials, which open extra slots for grand skills. The quests are handed out by the heralds standing near the Nicada city hall. Full details are in the Knight Runes guide.

Passive skill: Indomitable Spirit

You also gain access to the passive skill Indomitable Spirit, which raises your character's Morale as you hit certain Sealed Sky levels. The skill tomes are sold by Royal Knight Hector in Nicada.

Vitae farming near the Withered Flower Garden

Packs of Rising Sky Spirits roam the area around the Withered Flower Garden, and killing them speeds up vitae gain considerably. There is more on this in the On the Heavens and Morale guide.

Sealed Sky Chain

Storylines of the Second and Third Root

Three storylines unfold across these territories: Sealed Sky, The Titans' Past and Tales of the Gods. They are interwoven both in plot and in running order, and they are also built into the World Journey system. You can follow your progress through each chain in the story-quest catalogue.

World Stories (the Heavens and West sections). Access to all three storylines opens up on Sealed Sky.

The chains have a few quirks. Some quests can only be picked up in one specific location, from Vidar's cat Pure White. Others require you to first reach a certain value of a special stat — the Titans' favour.

Pushing the Titans' favour above the thresholds changes very little about your personal ending: only the short animated summary of your adventures and the wording on the Third Root medal.

Sealed Sky: the Second Root storyline 14 quests

At Althea's request you set out to explore the new lands lying in the shade of the great Sjesu. Your irrepressible companion Vidar joins you once again — but the further you go, the less you believe it is coincidence. What really drives this man, and what power stands behind him? On the emptied territory of the Second Root you meet only a handful of survivors of the great Titan war, and their stories make you see the gods in a very different light.

The prophecy once revealed to Odin at the Source of Wisdom is ready to come true. Gods and monsters take turns trying to win you over, but can your decision change anything in the inexorable march of fate? Just as you think you are close to untangling the knot of prejudice, misunderstanding and treachery, it becomes crystal clear that you were the pawn in someone else's game all along. Can you forgive that? Either way, your story in the West is now finally over.

Rewards for the full chain

Lost track of where you are? Check your accepted-quest list against the available-quest lists. If a quest shows up as available, you can almost certainly pick it up from Pure White in the location given above. If it is not in the available list, check whether you actually meet its requirements.

Finished the Sealed Sky line but still have Tales of the Gods arcs open? You can summon Vidar and Pure White at the Victory Horn to accept and hand in the remaining quests.

The World Tree badges are keepsakes that let you look back on the adventure. What World Tree Adventure Badge - II says depends partly on how you answered the Frost Titan's questions. World Tree Adv. Badge - III records which side you fought for — gods or monsters — and your standing on the Western Continent, which follows from your Titans' favour (see the note on quest #35).

Notes: reaching Sealed Sky level 5 also awards Soul Split Panacea x100 and Nebula Dust Orb x100. Reaching Sealed Sky level 10 also awards Nether Moon x1. Both are handed out through the Achievement system.

Past of the Giants

Past of the Giants

This story chain is loosely split into nine parts, each following a different character from the history of the Second Root. They are not listed in order in the story-quest catalogue, so do not worry if gaps appear along the way — everything fills in eventually, and the World Journey story quests on the Second Root count toward it as well. Each part is worth 50 search points.

Titan affinity 4 rows

Some quests require a certain amount of affinity with the four titans — Witch Titan Laufee, Hydro Titan Fabti, Mont Titan Jorde and Wisdom Titan Mimir. You earn it by answering Ice Titan Opoda's questions and by bringing the titans special gifts.

The gifts drop at a chance from specific monsters on Second Root territory. Once you have killed one, pick the item up immediately — other players can grab it. Then visit the matching titan and hand it in through his or her special quest. Only one gift can be given at a time; it stays with the titan and you get 10 affinity points.

Loot the gift the instant the monster dies — anyone else standing nearby can pick it up first.

90 affinity with each titan is enough to unlock every story quest. If you want to reach the alternative ending of the story, push for the maximum of 150.

Storyline walkthroughs

Proto Titan Ymir 7 quests

Ymir was the first of the Second Root's titans, filled with enormous magical power. When he woke from his primordial sleep he set out wandering, desperate to escape loneliness and find a companion or a friend. Driven by that longing he never stayed anywhere for long, and so he never learned that new titans were being born wherever he passed. When the magic ran dry, he fell into a deep, sound sleep once more...

Laufee was born out of Ymir's musings on beauty, the loveliest creature ever to stand in the shade of the World Tree. God King Odin saw her and set his heart on possessing her; her refusal led to war. Laufee believes the destruction of her people is her own fault, but you and Vidar convince her that beauty is not a mistake — the blame belongs only to the one whose heart harboured foul intent.

Fabti was born among the waters that wash the Second Root, and from that ever-changing element he received colossal strength and the gift of shapeshifting. For all his power the sea titan was deeply peaceful; he never turned it against living things, only sheltered and protected them — until the war with the gods, in which he was betrayed. You will have to decide whether Fabti has turned bitter against the whole world, or whether boundless kindness still lives in his heart.

Jorde was raised by a forest spirit and had almost no contact with the other titans. She is trusting and struggles to tell truth from lies, yet she always says exactly what she thinks. You help her learn the next lesson: in society one person's freedom ends where another's begins, and words easily become weapons that wound. Staying true to yourself is no excuse for forgetting how others feel.

By the time Ymir reached the Spring of Wisdom he was exhausted and despairing, and so the wise titan turned out gloomy and without faith in a brighter future. Holding an indescribable store of knowledge, he was not in the habit of sharing it: he saw no point in voicing an opinion that differed from the majority's. Lochie is a fire titan, born from a branch of the World Tree struck by lightning. The thunderclap that followed the bolt drew everyone's attention. Hydro Titan Fabti became his father and passed on his gift of shapeshifting, while Witch Titan Laufee, as his mother, granted him the power to win the hearts of gods and mortals alike. Valhalla

Every valkyrie is duty-bound to gather the souls of heroes fallen in battle for Odin and carry them to Valhalla, so that he will have support when Ragnarok begins. There were once more than a hundred valkyries, but some of them, at Lochie's prompting, betrayed Odin and refused to surrender the heroes' souls, keeping them for themselves. You help the valkyrie Valkyrie defeat her rebellious sisters and return the souls of the brave to her.

Stories of the Gods

Stories of the Gods

The Stories of the Gods line is loosely split into 11 parts, each following a different figure from the Third Root's mythology. They do not appear in order in the story-quest catalogue, so do not worry if gaps open up along the way — everything fills in eventually, and the World Journey story quests on the Third Root count toward it as well. Each part is worth 50 exploration points.

Several quests in this chain ask you to kill a story monster (the rooster, the squirrel, Fenrir, Jormungand). If the monster is nowhere to be found, drop the quest and take it again — that puts it back in the world.

Heimdall, Guardian of the World Tree 5 quests

Heimdall is Odin's favourite son. Odin made him Guardian of the Tree, trusting him to hold the Rainbow Bridge at the Third Root and to sound the horn that would warn the gods of the coming Twilight. Odin gave him starry eyes and ordered the wind to bring him news so that he would never grow weary. Then one day the Tree shuddered and Heimdall hurried to the Fountain of Fate — where you happened to be already, on an errand for Light Empress Althea.

Nidhogg, Devourer of Roots 5 quests

The World Tree is home to many magical creatures. The dragon Nidhogg, the rooster Vid Hornier and the squirrel Ratatosk have lived in it since ancient times. The rooster grew fastest and took both the ash tree and the young dragon under his wing. The squirrel envied them — she was tiny, and she wanted the tree all to herself — so she tricked the dragon into gnawing a great hole in its roots. But could Nidhogg really have harmed the Tree?

To start this part you need Nidhogg's memory, which drops from Nidhogg when you kill him. Once the quest is credited, Nidhogg stops being visible to your character — so if you did not loot the memory, you will have to team up with someone who has not yet finished 'Skyseal The Vile Dragon'.

Frigga, Mother of the Gods (Third Root)

You watched the goddess of darkness pierce the goddess of light's heart with a plain little sprig. What drove the sisters to that? In the past you witness Frigga giving birth to twins: one warm and shining, the other cold and misty. All of Frigga's love and care went to Ilya, while Evelyn got neither attention nor affection. When she learned of the prophecy, Evelyn found an ally in a herb as inconspicuous as herself.

Frey, God of Abundance 5 quests

Frey is the kindest of the gods. He watches over farming and protects the tribe of little genies that the lands of the World Tree call alfs — the Light and Dark Elves. Long ago he planted two trees near Neverfall, and light and dark genies settled in them. Learn more about this god and stand up for him in battle, and you get a promise in return: Frey and his elves will come to your aid in your hour of need.

Odin, King of the Gods (Third Root)

Odin, King of the Gods, is ready to help you bring Lochie down. He shares one of the visions granted to him: Lochie was born in the flame that engulfed the Spear of Eternity, and the Spear of Eternity will be his undoing. Odin wants you to restore Gungnir, the magic spear forged from a lightning-wrapped branch. Knowing that the gnomes are the finest smiths in the Western lands, you set off to Elder Earl in Rodentia. Now the weapon, its new head gleaming, waits for its hour.

Before you take 'Forging Spear of Eternity', carry plenty of coin. A failed attempt costs 100,000 silver for a new hammer, and a ruined shaft costs 10,000,000 silver to replace — and the replacement quest does not even appear in the dialogue if your bag is short.

#1Reforging Spear of EternityRequires 'Skyseal Odin VS. Fenrir' (Sealed Sky main story #18). In one sub-quest Elder Earl asks you to bring him a protective suit: the Rubber Set is sold by Grocer Arnold in Neverfall at for 1,000,000 silver.Odin and Fenrir Islet141,912 vitae
#2Forging Spear of EternityA fairly demanding quest. Activate the Forge Iron Mauler, land the cursor inside the central zone to produce a Perfect Spear head, then join head and shaft by right-clicking the Spear of Eternity's shaft. You get 30 seconds for all of it. You can retry after a failure: a new hammer costs Earl 100,000 silver, a new shaft costs 10,000,000 silver (the quest is not shown if the character does not have enough coin in the bag).141,912 vitae · Divinity Stone x1, Oracle Stone x1, Destiny Stone x1
Hela, Goddess of Death 3 quests

Grim Reaper Hela is Lochie's daughter. The moment she was born her flesh began to vanish, baring white bones wrapped in black mist. Lochie, who had promised Odin to keep unbroken watch in the Frost Temple, broke his word and hurried to the Fountain of Fate. Odin was there too. He had already drunk from the Spring of Wisdom, so he saw the darkness and hatred in Lochie's daughter at once. He ordered her exiled — but, unwilling to anger Lochie, he immediately set her to rule Niflheim.

Jormungand, the World Serpent 8 quests

Jormungand is Lochie's child, born of a secret affair between Lochie and a titaness. Lochie could not take him in, so the serpent was raised by Wisdom Titan Mimir. One day Odin came to the Spring of Wisdom and saw the destructive power in the enormous snake. Taking advantage of the fact that Jormungand had not finished growing, he threw the serpent into the sea at the roots of the World Tree. Jormungand never wanted to harm this world — but then Thor, the god of thunder, fished him out.

Thor, God of Thunder 3 quests

Thor and Lochie are counted as brothers, but there is little love between them. Once the gods threw a feast and had nothing to hold the wine, so Thor set out to Himmel, father of Tyr the god of war, to borrow his cauldron. Hearing of it, Lochie decided to have some fun with Thor and bet him the cauldron that he could not lift a little kitten. Lochie refused to claim his prize, but nobody enjoyed the joke, and the god of trickery never made it to the feast.

Spoiler for 'A Feast Without Wine': the answer to the riddle "What is the hardest thing?" is Himmel's head. It is also given away in Giant Himmel's opening dialogue if you would rather find it yourself.

Cerberus Garm, the Hellhound 6 quests

Cerberus Garm was once a pair of hounds, Gal and Moore, who served Ullr, the god of hunting. When the war with the titans broke out, Ullr — the best marksman among the gods — rushed to the battlefield. Facing the Hydro Titan, each hound tried to show the other up and so neither used its power. Ullr died, and the hounds ran back to the Temple of the King. Odin was furious: he fused them into one and left only two dog heads, bound together for eternity.

Tyr, God of War 4 quests

Another of Lochie's children was the huge wolf Fenrir, and Tyr was the only one who dared to take care of him. Fenrir grew very fast, and Odin decided it was time to bind the wolf in magic chains. Because Fenrir would eat from the war god's hand, you were able to chain him — but it frightened him, and he bit off the hand that fed him. Not until Twilight came did Tyr get the chance to explain to Fenrir that he had not betrayed him and bore him no grudge.

Lochie, God of Trickery 5 quests

Lochie is a child of tree and flame, and of a sea giant and a witch — but his true parent is the World Tree. Through him the Tree tried to destroy the gods and titans who had seized its body. Lochie was not evil to begin with, but Odin's fear of the prophecy and the cold stares of the gods turned his gentleness into guile. With only himself to rely on, he stopped believing in the gods and began to lay his plan of revenge.

Finishing the story may leave you with a bitter aftertaste. You did so much for the people of the Western lands, and now you are asked to leave the continent. But there may be sweetness in it too: the adventure is complete, your Boundary progression along with it, and an even more thrilling journey to uncharted shores lies ahead.
